College planning
"College" can be an intimidating concept for high school students, but your guidance counselor is here to help you through the process. There are 4 major suggestions we have for all students to prepare for college:
1. Get good grades in your classes and learn as much as possible.
2. Take the hardest classes you can handle.
3. Get involved in the school and the community
4. Take the ACT twice: once in March of your Junior year with the MME (free test) and once on your own during your Junior or beginning of Senior year.
General college tasks for Sophomore year include:
visiting any college campus you can
looking at some college websites to get a general idea about college life and offerings
keeping track of activities
Junior year:
Visits whenever possible--either on campus or at school
Use college search websites to narrow choices based on your academic and social needs
Take college admission test(s): ACT, PSAT, SAT, SAT Subject
Attend College Information Night with your parents
*if you are thinking of a military academy appointment, you must start early. See your counselor for help.
Senior year:
Narrow your list to less than 5 (probably) and apply online from the college website or common application
Attend Paying for College Night in November with your parents
Pay attention to scholarships and deadlines and apply for scholarships
Read all correspondence from the colleges of your choice and submit further documentation as needed
Fill out the FAFSA after January 1 and before March 1 (Attend FAFSA Completion Night if needed)
Make a college decision by May 1
