CAreer Planning
As high school students, your goal is to explore different career possibilities, while keeping your options open. Most people change their career several times, so the goal of your guidance counselors is to help to prepare you for life after high school and to encourage the job skills that will serve you well in any career field.
Each year, every student will complete an EDP (Educational Development Plan) using Career Cruising. The username is EKHS and the password is kentwood. Mrs. Buyze has the login information for every student if you forget your login for the actual EDP. There are many other tools within Career Cruising to explore career preparation, pay, growth, and education.
Students can also explore careers by taking a variety of Career Tech Ed courses at East Kentwood or at Kent Career Technical Center. See your guidance counselor to see how a Tech Center program would fit into your high school experience.
Internships are available for credit at East Kentwood or on your own after school or in the summer. Mrs. Buyze or your counselor can give you good advice regarding internships that might be available.
Several other websites can be helpful for career planning. On the Michigan Department of Labor webpage, there is information regarding the top jobs in the state and the relative growth and employment in different industries.
The ACT website has some information about the world of work and a variety of different career paths.
Every student should also have a resume. There is a resume builder on Career Cruising, or a variety of other websites have free resume builders. It can be frustrating for high school students to build a resume because they have little to no job experience. We encourage them to think of the attributes of a good worker and represent those in the best way possible on a resume. This could include school classes, activities, volunteer work or community service.
While we understand most high school students don't know exactly what they will end up doing, it never hurts to explore the multitude of options.
